Aluminum Grade for Wheel Caps

Nov 17, 2003 3 Replies

I am making some wheel caps for auto wheels. What would be a good grade of aluminum to use.

7075 is one of the hardest, strongest, and widely used in the aircraft industry .

And the corrosion factor is something to think about. Do you intend to leave the metal bare or plate them? Is cost an issue? If you are doing a few, probably not. If planning to make a bunch it will be. Figure almost double for cost of 7075 over 6061 for instance.
