Best lathe: Bushings and belt drive

Well, here's a "few" from my experience as they come to mind: Hendey, Monarch, Lodge & Shipley, Nebel, Bradford, Carrol-Jameson, Axelson, Cincinnati, Springfield, Simmons, LeBlond, Sidney, Colchester, Harrison, Dean Smith & Grace, Noble & Lund, Graziano, CMT Ursus, Celtic, Gornati, Fimap, Baroni, Elliott, VDF Boehringer, Lang, Weisser, Martin, Tos, Wagner, HMT, Mazak, Moriseki etc, plus the various current makers from Taiwan and China.

Perhaps it might be easier to name the "few" that didn't use roller bearings? :-)

I guess Ive been putting the wrong bearings in Hardinge, OmniTurn, Logan, Southbends, some LeBlonds, Supermax, Eisen, Weiler, some Moris, some Mazaks, and so forth.

Next time Ill ask for an equivelent roller bearing and not use those Grade 7-8 angular contact bearings or plain balls.

Works for me. They have to be cheaper.

Btw..you included a host of lathes above...that no one sees. Baroni? Celtic?..btw..the two TOS/Lion (Bulgarian) were ball bearings.

The aim of untold millions is to be free to do exactly as they choose and for someone else to pay when things go wrong.

In the past few decades, a peculiar and distinctive psychology has emerged in England. Gone are the civility, sturdy independence, and admirable stoicism that carried the English through the war years . It has been replaced by a constant whine of excuses, complaints, and special pleading. The collapse of the British character has been as swift and complete as the collapse of British power.

According to daniel peterman :

That depends on the vintage. Mine (6x18 Atlas/Craftsman) uses plain bearings.

But I agree that the later ones do use tapered roller bearings.

Yes -- those were the "Clausing Colchesters", and mine is not one of those. And I don't know what their spindle bearings are like.

Enjoy, DoN.
