Do 1J step pulley and 2J vari-speed heads use the same spindle? I am looling at changing my (bent) R-8 spindle to a QC 30, but all of the info for the Erickson/Kennametal QC 30 says "for J and 2J variable speed heads".

I would have expected the upper, splined end might be different, but after looking at a couple manuals and parts lists, it appears the spindle is the same for both.

Nope, the 2J is several inches longer than the 1J. Just check the replacement drawbars, they have 2 sizes. Basically, the whole splined section is several inches farther up on the 2J.

Oh, maybe! I know the drawbars are different, but maybe just the hex part is longer so it sticks out the varispeed enough for the wrench to grip it.
