Pray tell, what is "a doddle"? As in, "then boring for the bearing race was a doddle"? Does it mean a straightforward low-stress task, or a tricky nightmarish one?

A "doddle" is something that is very easy.
Grant - yes a 'doddle' is something that was easy - in fact usually easier than anticipated.
