casting - shaw proses

Can anyone help with more information regarding the use and preparation of ethyl silica slurry. How long does it take to gel ?

any information would br appropriated, I need to make a number op bronze dies for use as permanent mold casting of aluminum

You will have to develop the times from experimentation with your mix. It could range from a few minutes to much longer. It was used at one foundry where I worked. I don't have much personal experience with it. They are use the Antioch process and Hydroperm process. All three processes have to be worked out (blending, amounts of components, mixing time and setting time). It will also depend on the pattern material you use.

As I understand it, you are making bronze permanent molds to make aluminum castings? Why not make iron molds? It would be more economical.

Well, that depends on what equipment you have.

I can't quite melt iron yet, though I'm getting closer:

trying to heat the thing inside and the coil got too hot, well I melted something -- the solder! D'oh... melts pennies tho ;)
