Zowee! I know those lances were powerfule (we talked about them here on rcm a while back), but that's some SERIOUS amout of handheld heat. Most impressive.

Impressive the dry out and heat up capability. I have used some refractory castable for glass blowing related use but the same is also used to line steel ladles and the like, it's a Harbison Walker product like Mizzou and the dry out is like heat at 40C/hour to 110C and hold for 1/2 hour per inch of thickness, then to around 250C and hold for the same, the to about 550C and hold for the same, then ideally take it up to the maximum working temperature. My parts are small enough to fit in an 18" round top loading electric ceramic kiln with a temperature controller, doing the same on one of those beasts is I would imagine many orders of magnitude more of a challenge. It would be interesting to see it done but I would imagine it's a regular occurrence in a steel town.
The time I went to Hoesch steel in Dortmund I was wondering where the steel mill was as we seemed to be driving through a city with 3/4 story building lining the route with quite a few railway tracks in the road and then we turned into a gap in the buildings and there was the steel mill in the midst of it all with things like the rail car that started the thread scattered around. I'll have to google Dortmund and see if they have a satellite image of the area to see how big it really was.

Scrap is scrap. Oxy Torches, or explosives, just break that sucker up.
Hmmm, if it has a refractory liner, might it not be "simpler" to just peal the gondola off the refractory material, then peal off the refractory material, leaving you with a pile of steel junk, a pile of broken refractory material, and a slug of pig iron? At least, that would be my first idea to deal with it.
How hard would it be to just melt the iron out?
Aren't there gnomes or dwarfs who have a "work metal" spell or skill who could mine it for you?
