friction SS

Apr 14, 2012 7 Replies

I spend time on RCM because every now and then I get a truly original idea I never would have considered.

I had bought a HUGE pile of stainless steel sheet at auction years ago. Because I had ruined more than one band saw blade cutting slow and careful, I gave up sawing SS.

In somebody else's thread Ned Simmons suggested friction cutting SS. WTF??? I had never heard of it. Turns out a friction blade for my saw costs $15.

I found out today if you go to top speed, SS cuts like butter. Thanks to everybody here.

This one little trick will pay for wading though all the OT crap and flotsam for another year.

turn speed way up, cut your SS

Kind of like plasma cutting but without all the fancy gear

Karl,

How did you get the saw up to the 6000 FPM the blade wants to see?

Kevin Gallimore

I didn't measure, but I'm at about 4000. The blade is 10 foot and I can hear the weld joint less than 2 seconds apart. Its just my top speed on the two step pulley system.

It might not work on thick stock without more speed.

Karl

At 2 seconds per tick you would have 60/2 = 30 blade passes per minute, or 300 FPM. At 6000 FPM, or 600 blade passes per minute, you'd hear the weld joint tick 10 times per second.
