Help with finding unusual sized tap

I'm trying to fix my old Ideal lathe and I need to make a locking ring (retainer) for the gear on the spindle extension. The problem is that the spindle is threaded 7/8" 20 TPI (UNEF) and taps for this thread are about £50 ($80) in the UK. Can anyone point me to a cheap source for this tap or is anyone willing to make me up a locking ring with this thread. All suggestions gratefully received, Martin.

Just a thought. It isn't a K nut for supporting a bearing is it?

The most obvious solution, since it is of fairly large diameter, is to make some sort of jury-rigged temporary fix to allow the lathe to cut threads. Then, use a single- point inside threading tool to chase the thread. If you know someone else that has a lathe, they can probably make it in 15 minutes.

Thanks for the link; they are WAY cheaper than anyone else.

Well, heck. I've got a tap that size but it's marked "brass" right under the size. Anybody know if a "brass" tap can be used in steel or not? It's made by Wood&Spencer, if it is usable I'd ship it off to the UK for the cost postage.

I should also mention that the one I have is a plug tap, getting a thread started may be a little difficult.

Provided it's HSS or carbon still it will work ok in steel. The brass might refer to British Standard Brass, but all BSB threads are 26TPI. If the tap is definitely 20TPI then I'd be happy to accept your offer. Please send me an email so that I can send you my address. Martin.

Hi Martin,

I just happen to have a few of these. They say 7/8-20 NS. +.003 The manufacturer is John Bath Co. They are unused. They are bottoming taps with only about a 1 or 2 thread lead and they have 6 flutes.

I'm not looking to make any money on them. If it sounds like it will work for you, tell me where you are and I'll send you one.

George.

Sorry I can't make it.

MSC has good prices on special (UNIEF and other) taps, and WT Tool even better prices.

Can't you bore the threads on this lathe, another, or a friend's?
