How do I re-zero my 6" Starret dial calipers?

Question

I have a pair of Starret 6" dial calipers and I must of got a chip in the gear and rack and it skipped about .006. Can someone tell me how to get them back in shape? I remember someone telling me a long time ago how to do it with a thin wire but I forgot the process. Any help would be great, thanks, Craig

Sounds like less than a tooth.  Can't you just move the dial?

Craig,the calipers should have come with a resetting tool.This is nothing more than a narrow piece of shim stock about .005"thickness.Set the caliper to about 3".Slip it under the head along the rack until it hits the pinion.Hold it there and gently roll the pinion onto it just a tad. Now pullout the shim.With any luck the pinion will drop into the rack to give zero withcalipers closed.Try again until you get it.I'm an old hand at this!  :-))RichDm

Like Tom says it sounds like way less than 1 tooth. On my Tesa's 1 tooth is about .020. Plus, I believe some of the calipers have 2 pinions riding on the rack to eliminate backlash.

Wasn't it Tesa that has Starret now, or Etalon? Or the other way around.
