How It's Made: Brass Trombones

A local cable channel has the HOW ITS MADE series. One of the best segments ever IMO was how brass trombones are made. The segment was probably only 15 minutes but it was fascinating to see the craftsmanship involved in making these fine instruments. Next time it is on I plan on taping to a VHS tape so I can view it at a slower pace.

What is a "VHS" tape?

Now now Tom.

VHS implies VHS Format magnetic recording "tape".

Actually, it's quite specifically a specified category of said tape. So even if Tom is being hopelessly and pointlessly pedantic, he has chosen the wrong thing to be petty about.

After intensive reminiscing, I DO remember VHS! And, I think there may be a machine or two somewhere in the basement right next to the Beta and the Laserdisc. PVR, BABY!

I wasn't trying to be a smartass, I was pointing out the fleeting technology. I'm sure someday I'll show my friends an old hard drive and we'll all have a good chuckle.

Even more fun to do it.

Fire. Hammering on metal. Week in a machine shop. Beer.

What's not to like?

(maybe buffing?)

Okay, I admit I never did get the slide quite aligned after re-drawing the tubing to form the stockings. To a trombonist the result must have been one sorry sack of, well, sackbut... but it was playable.

Speaking of brass instruments, here's a link to a trumpet factory tour:

This "Zachary" inserts some annoyingly juvenile attitude at times, but otherwise it's pretty good.

Rats! And I thought I was first to say so. Believe it or not, I posted my previous message before reading this one.

If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, blah blah blah---- :-)

Thanx for a great primer on silver soldering, not even to mention the musical aspects ! I'd imagine, even the maestro metal musician . . . errr, make that "magician", Don Foreman could learn a thing or two.

Absolutely facinating. Thanks for the serious metal content.

Isn't that what Edison used on his first Phonograph or am I thinking of Betamax...
