I've had enough!

*Please* -- "[OT]" instead, because (as I mentioned before), Outlook Express takes "OT:" to be "Re:" in another language and strips it out before adding back "Re:". This changes the marking in mid-thread.

Enjoy, DoN.

What I don't undersand is why some people find it such a burden to simply ignore posts that they are not interested in. I do it all the time, then when something interesting catches my interest I read it. What's so hard about that? It's so bad you have to quit the group all together? I guess some people are just overly sensitive.

I really wish people would not ascribe attributes to me which are undeserved. And I REALLY hate being mentioned in the same breath with at least one other person on that list.

I've never really left, but I am a bit less active.

As others have said, kill-files and active group searching with a decent newsreader (Forte Agent, v3.2 [MULTIPLE EMAIL AND PERSONAS!]) have brought my personal s:n ratio way up.

AAMOF, that search feature is the only reason I would have ever seen this thread, since my name was mentioned, and that is something I, understandably, keep an eye out for.

That self same search feature was also mighty handy in determining the value of the dearly departed Rastus, too.

Hey Don, and sadly if your 're serious, Peter Forbes....

Lots of us know from whence your decision comes. I've got so I can skip over a ton of RCM "spam" pretty easy now. Maybe adds five minutes to my day (or is that subtracts five??).

I've never looked to see if there is newsgroup for "US political ranting and raving", but I get the feeling quite often that if there is, the stuff we see on RCM is because the guys here couldn't actually hack it there, and so they play out the fantasy on RCM kinda as big-fish-in-a-little-pond sorta way

My bigger complaint is that NOBODY bothers to do a Subject: change to keep the point current as the thread does its hop-scotch. Starts off as =Subject: My Metalworking Dick Is Pretty Big=, and after two replies the body veers over to who cares, or not as big as mine, then onto the size needed for me to do YOUR wife or mother/sister, and then off onto what cures your particular variety of STD, and carries on along for a great while, never changing the Subject: even if it does at some point veer back to aluminum dick-splints which I might personally find interesting, but by now I'm skipping over the thread!!

If you do find a "better place" though, P-L-E-A-S-E do drop back and let us know, cuz I haven't!! Sorry to see you guys go.

Take care.

Same goes for me.

I'm using Mozilla's Thunderbird reader and have it filtering about 20 names, and the group has gottem pretty pleasant to read. When a thread "goes bad" I put it on the ignore list. I might miss the occasional nugget that gets posted late but it gets to feel like searching for that nugget is like digging through a cesspool, so it's just not worth it.

Bye-Bye, Don. What I don't understand is when someone gets disgusted with the OT crap and leaves, they feel the need to make an OT announcement about it. Why not just pull the plug and go about your business? This announcement has about thirty posts already and the S/N ratio is worse than it was before Don left. IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT, DON! Enjoy all your new found free time. Tom

I think it works like this:

Those of you who were involved with the internet before the birth of the www will remember the internet evolved from more humble beginnings. Many began using the internet through a university owned and managed connection.

When the universities (and associated government bodies) were running the show some of you may remember the very real (or perceived) concerns about available bandwidth. Because of technology growth these concerns are no longer much of a concern for most casual internet users.

However during this early period many began to note others lavish use of bandwidth and felt justified in chastising these "others" using the backing of their peers for authority for their actions as "net cop".

Times change, unfortunately some people do not. These people are stuck so far down in their rut they can't see the community these groups have become. So instead of growing with the rest of the community they're still back in the "dark ages" as far as internet social skills are concerned.

I'd like to join with everyone else and welcome all these "lost" folks back to the group and ask them, in the light of modern advances, to take another look around and see if what we're all saying is true: It's ok to post a "marked" OT item in your favorite newsgroup if you feel it's important for your on-line associates to see it for review. I would like to say IMHO this might even include jokes or personal e-bay experiences or other items of interest, but please no "get rich quick" scams ;(.

I don't killfile folks. I do ignore (shun) them in extreme cases.

True I post a lot here. Also true that gunner and I go head to head on politics on occasion, it's a free-for all in that regard.

Possibly I've been posting too much here.

I've been lurking on here (and rarely, posting) since just after the end of the Altavoz era, now THAT was something LOL. FWIW I felt this group didn't weather 9/11 too well, and I bet a lot of them (groups) didn't.

Not if you're enjoying it. Besides, you've answered enough metalworking questions that the next time somebody asks about the difference between silver soldering and brazing, you can answer with a hot-key.

No, others have answered as well - that it's so much that they can't be bothered to work around it, and therefore will no longer be sharing their knowledge here. The fact is that most of the uh, pundits here participate in multiple newsgroups, and could easily meet up in any of several more appropriate places to discuss politics. Then, if those who've left RCM decide to come back, there'd be more metalworking content for everyone to read.
