I wold simply rent a 20' flatbed trailer from U-Haul or the like and be sure to put a red flag or two on the beams. And stay off the interstate.

Be careful, you are only allowed 4' of overhang off the rear... A 20' trailer might be a tad short.

I don't think that's true, at least in most states. If you have more than four feet of overhang, you need to attach a red flag to it in the daytime or a red light at night. I haul up to 24' stuff on my 16' flatbead truck all the time...

Your luck may vary. DOT regulations specify 4' overhang (nationwide) without an oversize permit. Ask any trucker. (I don't have to I am one.) They (highway patrol, smokies, whatever) may not bother Joe Blow hauling a few pieces of steel but they will be all over a big rigs ass.

The following is a cut-and-paste from the California Vehicle Code. Oversize load permits are required when the TOTAL length of the vehicle and its load exceed the maximum (40 ft., in the case of a straight truck, etc.). I suspect the laws of most other states are similar.

24604. Whenever the load upon any vehicle extends, or whenever any integral part of any vehicle projects, to the rear four feet or more beyond the rear of the vehicle, as measured from the taillamps, there shall be displayed at the extreme end of the load or projecting part of the vehicle during darkness, in addition to the required taillamp, two red lights with a bulb rated not in excess of six candlepower plainly visible from a distance of at least 500 feet to the sides and rear. At any other time there shall be displayed at the extreme end of the load or projecting part of the vehicle a solid red or fluorescent orange flag or cloth not less than 12 inches square. 35410. The load upon any motor vehicle alone or an independent load only upon a trailer or semitrailer shall not extend to the rear beyond the last point of support for a greater distance than that equal to two-thirds of the length of the wheelbase of the vehicle carrying such load, except that the wheelbase of a semitrailer shall be considered as the distance between the rearmost axle of the towing vehicle and the rearmost axle of the semitrailer.
