Horse pucky, Don. If anything, it's a ball screw profile. Look again.

I couldn't see a clean image of the profile in any of the images which I examined. Since the URL has been trimmed, I can't easily go back and look again.
Enjoy, DoN.
O.K. I backtracked to my own article, which still had the URL quoted, and downloaded the images. I then boosted the gamma on each to brighten it (I needed about 1.8 for a good image), and I still could not get as much detail as I wished, as a lot was lost to JPEG artifacts, but if anything it is for either grooving for a small O-ring, or perhaps cutting an Acme thread. It is not rounded on the end as would be needed for a ball screw (and that would really be cut by a profiled wheel on a toolpost grinder anyway).
Depending on the perspective when I zoom in, I see either (view with a fixed pitch font like Courier to avoid distortion of the image):
---- | ----
or
----- / ----
As the format of the tip -- with the latter being a buttress thread I guess.
I still want a close-up focusing on the profile and nothing else.
Enjoy, DoN.

I see it as distinctly round; semi-circular, in fact.

Part of the problem is the JPEG artifacts which make it difficult to tell for sure -- even zoomed into the area in question. But what I see when zooming in shows a square profile.
So -- what does Iggy say after examining it closely? (Ideally, also posting a close-up photo of the the cutting profile square on.)
Enjoy, DoN.
I see Iggy has never seen a threader before

Whenever a Liberal utters the term "Common Sense approach"....grab your wallet, your ass, and your guns because the sombitch is about to do something damned nasty to all three of them.
holding one of these cutters in hand; I don't see how it would work for threading. the angles are wrong, and the shown holder would have to have a shim to get the relief needed for threads. see United States Patent 3999265 the one I'm holding, 3" dia, .090" width cut, .3" max depth of cut with .2" max cut before the 45 degree chamfer starts cutting, is a full round disk with a slot ground into it to provide a cutting edge, has a threaded center hole for mounting, looks to be tool steel, machined, hardened and ground used it on a B&S screw machine - cuts off the part and provides leading edge chamfer to next part on one op
I've never seen a threader like this, but I can see how a few angles changed in the one shown and a cutter with the right profile it would be a threader.
