I'm trying to learn machining and metalcrafting so that I can scratchbuild miniature automobiles. I have a Sherline setup and can use the lathe pretty well. But does anyone know where I can get info specifically on the subject of crafting parts for model autos? How about where I can get plans on vintage cars? Are there any website on working with brass & copper sheet?
Gerald A. Wingrove, MBE (Member of the British Empire) This man got a decoration from the Queen of England for his work as a modelmaker of vintage automobiles. I bet if you ask him a few questions he would be more than helpful.

and his own web site at

where you can see his "current project" in photographs from start to finish. Mind blowing work. On this site he also has a section called "questions", where obviously you can ask him all sorts of questions. Not only that, you can also read questions asked by others and his answers to those questions. This man gladly shares his knowledge. He is a true master.
It happens that I searched the Web just last week for information on scratch-built model cars. There appears to be very little out there. There also is very little on the Web, that I've been able to find, that you would call accurate drawings or 3D models of cars. There is more on trains and stagecoaches than cars, if you can believe that. Oh, there are some detailed CAD models for sale out there.
One thing I didn't try was the forums/groups on Yahoo. They have some modeling forums where you may find help.
As for working brass and copper sheet, there are numerous sources for metalcrafters, which someone else probably will help you with.
Good luck. It's an interesting subject. BTW, I'm working on applying template-molding of gypsum plaster to make a 1/5-scale model. The first thing I'm doing is analyzing some models, using lead wire to make templates, to see if any of them actually are made of "swept" shapes. No luck so far, but I've only gone back a couple of decades and I've only been able to check a couple of models. I need to find some kid with a big model car collection. d8-)
This is not really "advice" but if you have any interest in model vehicles you have to see this:

It's a 1Meg download so be patient. All I will say is that it took the builder 15 years to complete. I hope this inspires you rather than makes you give up ;-)
