Oil Gun

Guys,

does this oil gun generate sufficient pressure to lubricate mill through zirks?

Don't know for sure but I would doubt it.

I used a small grease gun and did a retrofit so that I could handle oil.

Just needed to make a piston the right size and fit it with an "O" ring.

Just make sure that the ring is made from buna or some other material that is oil resistant.

Otherwise the ring will absorb the oil and swell enough to jam the piston.

Highly unlikely, however they are nice oil cans, especially on sale for $2-$3. Load with cutting oil, way lube, spindle oil, etc.

Somebody posted a fix to a regular grease gun for this purpose several years ago and I can't find the link. But, all I did was to get a regular lever operated grease gun, remove the rod, spring and plunger assembly that used to push the grease toward the pump end, and sealed that whole end with silicone sealer. To fill it, you just unscrew the tube, hold it upright, like a bottle, fill it with oil and screw it back on to the pump end. I hang the grease gun right beside the mill with the tube end down, so no oil leaks out of the pump end. To use it, I hold it tube-end-up so the oil gravity feeds to the pump end of the grease gun. Been working for 10 years or so.

Yes it will. It will actually generate enough pressure to blow out the ajacent oil plugs om my mill. I have to keep several on hand because if I am not careful they'll shoot accross the floor to some secret location 8^(

Jay,

so you just stick it into a zirk and pump?

Thanks, Alex

I doubt it. It doesn't have the proper fitting to seal to a Zerk fitting, even if it *may* have sufficient pressure (which I am not at all sure of). They are cheap enough so you might be able to pick one up and try modifying it with a nosepiece from a real grease gun which

*is* designed to seal to Zerk fittings -- or study one, and make a new nosepiece from scratch to fit your oil gun.

Without that fitting, you will get more oil on your hand, and perhaps yourself than into the machine.

Enjoy, DoN.

I myself have surface grinders that have oil zerks. English made.

I'm going to try a grease pump with a metal pail. Put oil in the pail latch down the metal head, pump up some pressure and apply the 'grease' zerk to the fitting and oil.

I hope.

Item number 109022-2605 NorthernTool.com page 188 bottom right.

$109 USD in the catalog I have - seems a likely option.

I bought a cheap gun and that is what it was - not easily retrofitted.

I have my Dads grease gun that you pack with grease, not insert tubes.. But I want to keep it as is.

Martin, you should reconsider! It is very easy to modify a quality Plews grease gun to be a high pressure oiler which works perfectly with zerk fittings. See:

It's very easy to get the precise oil gun that guy modified (Schuck's) and after that it's a very simple mod. I made one back in the early '90s for my Bridgeport and it has worked perfectly ever since.

Yes. It takes a little practice to get it centered, so it doesn't spray back at you. I had to make a new tube so I could get the right orientation for some of the fittings.

Understand - I had that and couldn't find what I wanted. Bought one at an oil distributer I was buying multiple 5 gallons of various oils and it was not made to be altered the same. So when I looked at the catalog - wham - small tank of oil and in a professional pressure can, not pending a leak to squirt me or across the ship some day.

The peace of mind for the difference in price seems logical. Someday I might convert it to grease. Time will tell.
