1985-87 LIGHT DUTY TRUCKS Control unit for maintenance reminder light is located under dash, near steering columnor behind glove box. Some models use non resettable control unit. Replace it with a resettable type. (1)To reset SRI, turn ignition off. Remove tape over reset hole in timer.Lightly push a small phillips screwdriver into hole in timer unit marked RESET. With light pressure on screwdriver, turn ignition switch to RUN position. (2) Light should stay on while screwdriver is pressed down. Hold screwdriver down for approximately 5 seconds. Remove screwdriver. Light should go out in 2-5 seconds. If light does not go out , repeat steps 1) and 2). (3) Cycle ignition from off to run position. Light should glow for 2-5 seconds. This verifies proper reset of maintenance reminder light. Hope this is helpful.

It turns on a "Check EGR" or "Check Emissions" idiot light. You're supposed to then take the vehicle to the dealer and have the EGR valve de-carboned.

HTH.

Place over emissions light.

One of Ford's "better ideas" was to have a light come on every 60000 miles to remind you to perform maintenance. What makes it a "better idea" was how they cleverly hid the reset so you'ld have to pay a dealer to make the light go out.

Possibly, I'll root around under the dash again tomorrow. You wouldn't happen to have a picture of the thing would you?

Stupid Vehicle Emissions Testing people consider this "defeating a pollution control device."

I can't count the number of Ford pickups I've seen with a bit of electrical tape over that warning light.

Not Ford- the EPA mandated the warning system.

On GM products a flag marked "EGR" dropped in front of the odometer and was a bitch to reset.

No, but as I remember it is small.

1 1/2" by 1" by 5/8".

LOL, that's what I was thinking. It wasn't 12 hours after I bought my '86 Toy. that I climbed under the dash and pulled out all the buzzers. Then I saw the idiot light for gas emergency from sun light and tried to get it to come on. Bad idea ! That truck is a major pain to start dry. Lots of gas and a good battery.

I might get another Caddy , ohhh. They bitch on the dash a lot. If I could over ride some electronics and put a bigger radiator in these they have a lot of life still in them. The new one is south west of Austin. Anyone what to trade something for it if its not up to a 1500 mile trip? Still have to talk my mom out of it , but it will be thrown away if I don't jump on it and get a beach fix on top of it. Something around a '89 + . If I don't get a title from two passed away people soon I'm going to rip out the engine of the other one and maybe make an air compressor out of it. Its a shame cause I don't need a car.

It would be an excuse to get back , but I don't know if I could handle the airports. I can hear it now. "you are going with just a small bag of clothes one way?" I'm still pissed that they had ash trays on the last flight right before ahhh. I use to get mixed drinks and smoke in front of the much better looking stewardesses way before I was 18. Ohara/Ill. changed the drinking age like 12 hours before I was going through there with a 3 hour delay. I got real lucky and someone I knew flagged me down and bought me 3 at a time.

Hey, can I go bare footed now? :o)
