OT: house of cards collapsing?

It's also pretty darn interesting that today, even though only 7% of workers are members of a union, and they have almost no power anymore, right wing followers still blame them for every ill in society. It's also interesting that when unions were really powerful in the fifties and sixties and membership was around 35% of all workers, those workers were the best paid and received the best benefits workers have ever had in the country's history. So as union membership has declined to nearly nothing so have most of the good, high paying jobs. I wonder if there is any connection? Nah, unions never helped workers, did they?

There is normally a delay between cause and effect, especially when the effect is retirement and medical benefits.

Inflation is older than the Bible, and historically has had a single cause: The Soverign (the King in the old days, a Dictator more recently, and the Legislature in modern democracies) debased the currency somehow, most often to pay for various wars, nowdays more often to pay for various social programs than for wars.

But the core is the same: The Soverign is spending more than is being received. All else are details.

As are the worries about the various "paid-off, facilitators, aiders and abettors" who are profiting -- they have always been with us, and always will be with us, so they cannot be either cause or cure. Nor are they soverigns; only soverigns have the power to decide.

The classic way to debase the currency is to reduce the amount of gold or silver in the coinage. This requires no borrowing.

Borrowing does not debase the currency. What it does do is cause an increasing fraction of the national (or soverign) income to go into debt service (mortgage payments), squeezing other thing out. This does not change the value of the money.

With modern financial systems, many additional methods are available to a Soverign wishing to debase the currency.

At least with an elected Legislature and elected leaders, we the people have an opportunity to restrict the debasement of the currency, mainly by keeping spending under control, and reasonably matched to income. This is new in history. Kings didn't need to listen to their subjects, and so most often did not listen.

Why not?

After all, they may soon be more valuable than the "real ones" as currency...

I've several ones that are exchangeable for a cup of coffee. That makes them worth 13+ times more than the metal ones!

And here I thought that you'd _like_ the events to be publicised.

Since you want to frighten off the reporters and papparazzi, I must have been mistaken.

Remember the phrase "Not worth a Continental" from history class? This $2.00 Continental sold for $163.97 on eBay recently: Item: 170249851005

It beat inflation by 59% !

Not at all. Reporters do have live mobile vans, these days. As far as the papparazzi, that only requires a couple extra cables.

Chuckle...never been called that..been called just about everything else a time or two....

Folks called me Shiva once upon a time, for some reason. Troopie started calling me that for reasons known only to himself..and it stuck.

Big net with shackles would come in handy for them

You can pull a big net filled with reporters and papparazi behind even a small vehicle pretty easily. Its self lubricating............. Particularly if the mesh is large.

So, you've never let out a loud howl, or had the desire to be a DJ?

Have you ever been called late, for supper? ;-)

That can be painful, at times. I had to put up with a stupid nickname for 10 of the 12 years of public school, and was called four eyes for six years, because of my glasses, and very poor eyesight. In that case I laughed and told them I was smarter than tem, even though I had to work harder to read the textbooks.

Some of the reporters have to survive to cober the story, don't they?

If you're gooing to use a net, hang it under a chopper and see if you can hear their screams over the wind noise. ;-)
