OT: Networking advise

Have a Dell XPS w/gigabit ethernet. Got a 1 TB network drive w/ethernet connector (gigabit).

Tried: etherrnet cable between XPS-drive nothing crossover cable nothing 2 cables plus gigabit switch works, but REAL slow, like USB 1.1

Tried changing settings from gigabit to 100meg to 10meg. No improvement.

I just bought a EEE PC 1000h, which doesn't have a CD/DVD, so, I'd like to connect the EEE PC to have access to the CD/DVD on the XPS, as well as the network drive.

Any pointers to network setup or advice appreciated.

thanks

Go from the bottom up. Are the cables short enough, are they smoothly laid or do they have sharp bends, etc. What exactly is the transfer speed (as measured, no wild ass guesses). Are your network interfaces operating in gigabit mode.

etc etc

You need to be precise and measure everything that you can.

Is your EEE PC Windows or Linux based?

As far as the cross over, consider that all 4 pairs are used in stead of just two pairs.

You can indeed make a Gbit x-over cable, but its a different pinout than for 100bT or 10bT

A crossover cable may not be required if at least one end supports auto-MDIX.

Another complication may be that ethernet does not support plug-and- play, you need to set IP addresses for your PC and for the drive, unless that's already done.

Cables are 36", new, and jut laying on the table next to computer, drive.

Txfer rate is 3.72MB/Sec, Measured by PassMark Performance Test 6.1

Computer is showing Local Area Connection connected @ 1.0 Gbps

And the EEE PC is a windows unit, not connected yet.

My guess is that the connection to the storage device from the network switch, is 100 MBPS.

Can you plug it directly into your ethernet port and see your Local Area Connection setting after that to see if it is still 1 GB

Switch is marked as a "gigabit switch"

I connected the computer directly to the drive, got a disconnect msg, then a connected msg, @ 1.0 Gbps

No in txfer speed

How does that program that you mentioned, measure transfer speed?

Do you just us a samba shared drive for it?

=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 nothing

BTW when the port says "connected, 1GBPS" that just means the port sees the link signal, and is set for 1 gig operation.

3.72MBytes/sec x 8 bits/byte =3D 29.76Mbits.sec, well, at least its better than 10base-T...

Bought me a new toy, an Acer Aspire one. At the moment, Junior is playing with it; upgrading RAM, Installing Vista and showing it to a client who spent $2700 on a similar device. Gerry :-)} London, Canada

Got the EEE PC connected and running. BLAZING fast txfer rates to the network drive compared to the XPS. (100 mg network card, rather than gigabit)

Tried a newer driver the the XPS network card, now I have NO access to the network drive:(
