Very interesting compressor

At the Wason Crane Center in Streetsboro, OH, in the 80s, they had a 75 hp Worthington double-acting one-cylinder thumper and a 50 hp Worthington rotary screw compressor. Both had to be started first thing in the morning, but never at the same time. IIRC they wanted them started 5-10 minutes apart. They both had current-control starters.

The one-lunger barely made a sound under its heaviest load. The belt slap was louder. The rotary could drive one out of the mechanical room through any ear protection we had in the building to wear. (Banshees should have such voices.:)

Outside by the intakes, there was little more than a low rumble from the thumper and just a whoosh from the rotary.

Somebody (not me thank goodness) once started them but forgot to turn on the water pumps for the aftercoolers. Odd sounds and smells around that day.

Well, Gerry and Bruce say you can silence it, but I'd be amazed. Certainly not the one I referenced. And I bet the "silencer" that would do the job would cost a fair bit.

What the heck are you interested in owning a monster like this for anyway? Or is this just a rhetorical consideration?

I was at that factory to look at other things that I could buy. The compressor simply caught my eye. I even asked the last remaining employee of that factory, to run it for me, and looking at it run was also exciting.

I could never use this sort of thing in a residential setting, of course. But I considered briefly to buy it to resell. In the end I decided not to, due to size and good possibility that no one will want to buy it, being a 1950s or 1960s machine.

This compressor was rebuilt three years ago with new parts.

It sold today for $100.

Well, before you do start doing big things like running a large sandblast or beadblast box or plasma cutting, rig your shop air compressor with an unloader and switch it over to constant run. Or get a turbine style compressor for the main source, they are designed to be run that way. (Keep the little 5 HP piston unit as the backup, and the evenings and weekends air supply.)

Sandblasting causes medium sized compressors to start and stop a lot

- it catches up and shuts down for three minutes while you reposition the work or get a drink of water, then has to start again. Too many short cycles burns up the motor.

And when you are welding at the same time the air conditioning is running and then the air compressor kicks in, there goes the demand rate headed up again.

I wired my compressor to run in two modes, on demand, and continuous with unloader. I use the latter when sandblasting.
