What is meant by a 10" drill press ? I see different ones marked as 10" and some as 12", etc. The 12" ones look bigger, but what is the 12" measurement referring to ? Thanks !

Generally, the distance from the centerline of the spindle to the column.

Its the working distance from directly below the quill to the upright that holds the head up. It means you can put a piece of material at least 10" on the table and drill at the far side or a 20" something and drill in the center.
12 and 24 for a 12" drill.think of it as the "swing" as on a lathe.
Gunner, donning Nomex in preperation for a flame from the age old british vrsus US lathe "swing"

Hmmmm. I measured the ones in Home Depot today and the 10" ones were 5" from upright shaft to quill, 12" ones were 6" from shaft to quill.
Kind of a misnomer, but so is the term "2x4" .
Thanks !
Yep! What Robin said. Nice catch, Robin. .
