Wind chimes

My brother and I built a set of wind chimes a dozen years ago. To keep costs down, cut some 1/2" copper pipe to different lengths, drill through each pipe close to one end and suspend it with some fishing line or something similar so you can tap the pipe. Here's the best part: while tapping the pipe, look at a digital guitar tuning device, which will tell you whether you are above, below or on key. Remove a little bit of pipe in a grinder/sander and check again.... keep this up until the pipe is on key. After doing a few of these you will get a rough idea of how much to remove to get it on key. When done a dozen or so of different lengths, my brother (who has the 'ear') just started tapping a few together until he found some that sounded good together. The copper has turned a little green so it looks experienced now, but still sounds great. A 3/4" piece of pipe doesn't make much difference in sound, just louder.

I will try get the first one and if that sounds true go from there . They are tubes as I have cut the top and bottom off . They still sound very bell like but I hope to get a more mellow note by going to a softer striker . It is possible to experiment and cut bit by bit , but to keep my suspension point at the recommended 22.4 % that means cutting top and bottom every time . To be an even bigger pain my band saw has only a 7" diameter reach and these tanks are 9" . Anyway that is the current plan who knows might even work :-) . Ken Cutt

If I can find a tuner I will give it a try on the first pipe . Not sure how common these are but I will ask around . Almost anything is going to be better than MY ear . Failing that I will find a real musician and go with their judgment Ken Cutt
