Anyone know about pillar drills?

Hi, I'm new on here, I was directed here by a fellow Locostbuilder. I was drilling some gate hinges out for a mate & the drill bit snagged & broke free of it's taper & snapped the tang off the top. this isnt of any great importance but the drill itself is leaking oil from it's gearbox down the spindle (it stopped after about 20mins but only because it'll be empty!) My feeling is that something has snapped or split & it may be beyond repair but it was a good machine as it has a slow speed (45rpm) which is handy for hole saws so I'd like to know it's stuffed before I go shopping for a replacement. Anyone know how to strip one down? It's Progress No.2. Cheers for any help, Kev.

maybe it started leaking just because the oil heated up...got thinner ...and with old seals ...etc

mine used to do this ....

Ive stopped it doing it now

I put ISO 100 hydraulic in it

weeps a bit now nothing much ...not gone down on the glass for years.

mines a Jones and shipman gear headed one .

PS Alistair who posts on the home shop machinist forums has a progress gear headed drill ... i don't think that one holds any oil at all...on examination it was as dry as a bone ...all gone ..so maybe its a common fault.

all the best.mark

It always did leak a bit of oil, you had to dry the inside of the taper out every now & then or you couldnt get bits to take hold properly. This is something new though, it wasnt working anything like as hard as it has in the past without any problem. The oil was literally running out of it & it's fairly heavy stuff, mabye something like EPA90. I'll get a proper look at it this weekend I hope, I'm used to having to work on stuff I've never seen before without a manual at work so hopefully it should'nt be too big a challenge.
