crimping

I need to crimp connectors onto 6mm dia cable. Does anyone know of a design for a tool which I could use in a large vice or under a small fly press? It's the internal form and dimentions of the device which rearly I need Jim Lugsden.

Yellow crimp terminals take up to 6mm cable and simple hand tools for these are available for virtually nothing in tool shops, even the proper ratchet type tools can be had for a tenner if you look around.

Greg,

Yes my initial reaction was as yours, but Jim is asking for 6mm diameter not 6mm cross sectional area. Measuring a typical yellow crimp it will barely take a 3.5mm diameter.

Jim's 6mm diameter is 28.3 mm square cross sectional area.

Jim, I have a set of hand crimps you may borrow for 25mm cross sectional area which is 5.64mm diam if they are any use.

Well spotted 8-), and once you are up to such sizes the tools don't come cheap, it's not something I would try to make a DIY tool for either as the currents he must be dealing with to need such cables don't like loose crimps!.

We use a hexagonal die tool for anything over 4mm cross-section, we have the dies and tools and terminals for up to 120mm sq cable if anyone gets stuck.

Die pairs are about £40, tools are up to £500 for a decent hydraulic hand crimper, 3120 for the ratchet types.

Thank you, everyone, for your help and sugestions. I 've borrowed Andrew's crimping tool and will make a copy of the business end after tests. Regards Jim.
