Cross slide, uneven wear.

OK, I've solved (more or less) the cross-feed, it's now got about 2 thou'backlash in the middle and pretty much zero at the ends, which is doubtlessdown to wear in the screw.The next thing to receive attention will be the slide ways. It's a more orless conventional dovetail shape thing, with 2 gib strips in one side of theslide. They're a bugger to adjust, but the biggest problem seems to beuneven wear, which means that if you get it tight enough to have more orless no play in the most-used area (about 1/3 of the way along) it won'treadily get to either end, so you end up with a compromise.So. Any suggestions for how to skim the mating faces to get them backparallel? Obviously, there's some adjustment to be had in the gibs, orindeed they could be replaced; but there's not much point in that unless themain surfaces are parallel.The cross-slide comes off easily, the saddle probably not so easy, althoughobviously it comes apart somehow, and I don't doubt both need attention.

Why on earth would you surface grind brake shoes???? Cylindrical I could understand....

The car has been run on more than one occasion with the hand brake "nipped" up". Didn't regrind them, replaced shoes and read drums/disks :-(

I wasnt referring to the lead screw but the uptake in gib strip screws to account for the differing wear in dovetail at the centre of end.

I feel that you should take into account all the factors of wear. This is where I came in.Sadly, one cannot discuss the whole problem in a few scant lines.
