die grinder

I found a die grinder in the toyshop the other day. It was made by Georges Renault (now part of Chicago Pneumatic, apparently) and is marked K30_S:_D.



It's got a couple of parts I don't understand - can anyone here help me out ?

The collar around the front can rotate, so might be a control of some sort. It's not the on/off control, that's a bronze wheel at the back. The holes are the air exhaust. Possibly a speed control, but it doesn't seem to change the speed (as measured by the pitch of the motor). However, I'm running it off a 4cfm compressor which is woefully inadequate for it - perhaps it needs to be going much faster before it has any effect ? Or needs some load ?



There's an access screw near the back into a small chamber that has an airpipe running through it. Not sure what this is for - perhaps it's an integral oiler and I should fill it with oil instead of dribbling into the air connector or using an inline oiler ?

I'm guessing - you say the holes are an exhaust? They only go part-way around the circumference? Maybe it is meant to blow the dust away, and it turns so the dust blows in the right direction.

That's an interesting thought, thanks. But it would seem an expensive way to do it : the grinder is otherwise symettrical so simply turning the whole tool would achieve the same effect without needing a collar.

No it's all down to cost as this grinder will share the same body etc as trigger operated grinders / drills etc that can be oriented by just turning. The steerable exhaust will get the exhaust out of operators eye when used in those wire suspended operations you see on assembly lines.

OK, makes sense. It does have a suspension hanger.

Any ideas on that screwed cover at the back ? Should I fill the void behind it with oil ?

I have a desoutter 'turbo' pencil die grinder, not a new one, I've had it for about 25 years, and the sleeve over the exhaust on mine controls the speed. Wide open it's full speed at around 80,000 rpm, or progressively slower as you cover the holes. Although the sleeve also rotates on mine this does nothing, its the linear movement on mine that controls the exhaust and the speed.

I don't think I've used it for 10 yers or more, but I do remember that it consumes a lot more air than you would think.
