I've just tested the electric motor off a grinder I've bought. It starts straight up and seems to run fine, but there is a slight smell of burning and if you listen carefully a "crackling" sound -like tracking electrics! The capacitors are a bit rough looking (two paralleled together), and I'm not sure having them mounted in fresh air with all the connections open would pass current legislation.
The specification of the motor is Gryphon by Brook Motors PO1503 50Hz Type PROT 1HP 230V Cont Rating 2850rpm 4.4 F.L.Amps 50 degrees Centigrade Rise. Could anyone confirm the correct rating for the capacitors, and the correct connections. As this is on a grinder could it simply have some metallic dust floating around inside it?
Any suggestions gratefully received, as I'd rather not have to bin it (or it could be I'm just too tight to buy a new one!). If I do have to replace it, isn't 1HP a little over the top to drive a 4" cup wheel?
