We have a member with a 5" gauge Hall loco that wishes to take the packing out of the piston glands and replace with "O" rings but can not see how to get the piston rods disconnected.Can anyone help please

Who's design is the loco? Which end is he trying to disconnect, the crosshead or the piston? They could be connected in a multitude of different ways.
As an alternative, can the piston/rod/crosshead not be removed as an assembly?

The Piston would usually be permanently screwed onto the piston rod so you need to split the rod from the crosshead.
