Before we took the main plating transformer to the scrappie, we drained out about 100 gallons of very clean oil, which is a Shell mineral oil according the the transformer plate. Before we throw that into the waste oil receptacle at our local garage, does anyone want some? It's in 25litre plastic drums. Peter
Peter, Just a word of caution. . . . Before the early 80s transformer oil contined PCBs. Even now, in the UK, transformer oil is classed as hazardous waste. Here's an extract from DEFRA's website:-
"Transformers Electrical transformers may use specialist oil. When spent, used transformer oil is a hazardous waste. Older transformers are likely to contain polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), a harmful toxin that persists in the environment. If PCBs are present, the transformer oil is also likely to be classified as special waste and will require a consignment note for its movement. Seek advice on the disposal of transformer oil from specialist waste contractors."
IMHO, don't offer to give it away - you don't want to get yourself into conflict with the Environment Agency.
