More Transformer Oil

Before we took the main plating transformer to the scrappie, we drained out about 100 gallons of very clean oil, which is a Shell mineral oil according the the transformer plate.

Before we throw that into the waste oil receptacle at our local garage, does anyone want some? It's in 25litre plastic drums.

Peter, Just a word of caution. . . . Before the early 80s transformer oil contined PCBs. Even now, in the UK, transformer oil is classed as hazardous waste. Here's an extract from DEFRA's website:-

"Transformers Electrical transformers may use specialist oil. When spent, used transformer oil is a hazardous waste. Older transformers are likely to contain polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), a harmful toxin that persists in the environment. If PCBs are present, the transformer oil is also likely to be classified as special waste and will require a consignment note for its movement. Seek advice on the disposal of transformer oil from specialist waste contractors."

IMHO, don't offer to give it away - you don't want to get yourself into conflict with the Environment Agency.

We did check on this before we opened it up, we were aware of the possible problems, but the transformer was refilled sometime in the

1980's by Cannings, the oil complies with BS148 1984 which is a non-PCB type of industrial oil. Shell details: +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Gas absorbing transformer oil based on light mineral oil specially formulated for electrical applications. Complies with BS 148/84 type 1, IEC 296/82 type 1 and SEV 3163/72 class 1. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Thanks for the concern though.

OK, we have 18 drums of 25 litres each available, it's very clean and was put into the tranny when Cannings supplied it to the PCB factory before we took them over.

The top-up tin carries the Shell logo and BS148 1984 on it, so we are quite happy that it is a non-PCB type of oil.

Yes, we still have plenty available :-))

I'll try and sort out a distribution list so I can do the deliveries with other stuff. I've got to go to Chester tomorrow but couldn't organise things in time to get some loaded up today :-((
