In relation to my other thread I am restoring a Myford super 7. I hav the Myford paint and wondered. Should i apply primer to metal areas o just apply the enamel paint? If so which primer? I am looking for bes results and endurance. Many Thanks Colin Heat
To get a top-class finish you need to first all all get a good key to the metal suface, and then fill any surface irregularities before applying the final enamel. On my last Myford restoration I used Hammerite red oxide primer on iron parts, and Hammerite special metal primer on alloy parts, in both cases followed up several coats automotive spray-filler. This was then hand flatted with wet and dry paper (used wet) before spraying the final gloss. More recently I've had excellent results using just Tetrasyl spray putty to both prime and fill on iron and alloy. This stuff seems to stick to anything, and will build up several thou thickness in a single coat. Bright yellow, but who cares when its covered with the final gloss!
