Taper Turning

Hi All,

Foolish question of the day: I'm making a replacement captstan thingie for a cheep warco drill press - the little lad up the road had it knocked off the bench and smashed the casing where the handles screw in.

I'm doing this more for the turning practise than anything else. I need to turn a short, but fairly steep, like 45 deg., taper on the 'outside' part where I'm going to drill for the handle holes.

I've read that I can turn a short taper by setting the topslide to the required angle. I can't see how this works. If I set the tool holder over at an angle, it just cuts on a different edge of the tool. So I'm asking you lot, how does it happen?

Ed, when you do this you lock the carriage/crosslide and turn the handle on the end of the topslide. As the axis of this is already set over to the required angle it will cut the taper.

Hi Ed,

It's possible you have only the crossslide(the bit that goes across th bed) and to cut tapers you need the compound slide. This sits on top an has its own handle to move so this will then work. Look up lathe in google pictures and most will have this. Cheers Coli

Hi all,

Thanks for the replies. Didn't manage to try it last night, need to bore a hole in the other end before turning it round & starting on the taper.

I do have a compound slide, it's a 9" sarf-bend lathe. I've not done much turning, it's all a learning curve for me. Just one of those things that I can't clearly see the mechanics of it in my head. Esp. not while sat at a desk stareing at a stupid 'puter.

Guess it's one of those things that once you do it, ever'ting becomes crystal & bleedin obvious.

Another question for y'all - the old capstan bit was a close fit onto the shaft that lowers the drill head, but was secured with a hole drilled into both (collar & shaft) and a roll pin shoved through.

Would the recommended way be to reproduce the hole, in the same place & at the same angle in the part I'm fabricating, or just push the parts together and drill a new hole in both bits?
