I use an ISO VG220 gear oil on mine. This is quite viscous and has a 'tackiness' agent added which helps it stay on the slideways. We use this at work for the slideways and tiebar sliders on our moulding machines, which take very substantial loads indeed. Its a synthetic EP mineral oil thats also oxidation resistant. You can get it at reasonable prices from people like Dunlop Hiflex or Batoyle Freedom group. HTH

I use chainsaw oil (rough and ready I know). Like proper way oil it has a tackiness additive and is of a reasonable viscosity - and importantly I have it to hand.

My late father used to use chainsaw oil for the same reasons. One caveat with it is that it has a tendency to oxidise if left to its own devices for a long time. If this happens then you need paint stripper to get it off. DAMHIKT.
