Heat Resistance of PLA

charset="big5" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable

Hi: There is one biodegradable PLA (Polylactic acid)sheet for = thermoforming, but it will brittle as well as heat resistance is not = enough after thermoforming. I like to modify this sheet and need help. 1). More elastic. I believe add some rubber can help, however, = transparence will loss as well as non compatible, I like to get some = rubber type resin which can help elastic and keep transparence. = Plasticizer seems good, I don't know which one is suitable. Add = compatible resin is similar add plasticizer which can help elastic. 2).Increase heat resistance and keep transparence. I add some = calcium carbonates which can work, but loss transparence as you know.=20 The best way is add some resin which can get more elastic and = increase heat resistance. So, please help.

Don't know about PLA but PET is extremely moisture sensitive on extrusion and must be thoroughly dried. Not a factor in thermoforming because this is done at much lower temp. My suggestion is to check for degradation in making sheet. Frank

Dear Sir: Thanks for your information, Two problems of Poly Lactic Acid is brittle as well as heat resistance is not enough, PEG do as plasticizer however the product is unstable, I hope there are some resin which can make PLA more elastic, decress crystalline of PLA. Heat resistance is another problem, but I don't think two problems can solute at one time. Please help.

Hello Chyun Lee, PEG (polyethylene glycol) is very hydroscopic, it absorbs too much water. Try PPG (polypropylene glycol), it is more water resistant. Both PEG and PPG become more water resistant in higher molecular weights. If either PPG or hmw PEG work as a plasticizer, email again and I will tell you how to raise heat resistance.-Jitney

You may try low molecular weight polylactic acid as plasticizer, or low molecular weight poly(epsilon-caprolactone)(PCL), PCL is less sensitive to moisture but its melt point is only about 60C.
