polyvinyl alcohol from polyvinyl acetate glue

We live in the third world where to get polyvinyl alcohol in small quantities is very difficult. Does anyone know any way to formulate polyvinyl alcohol from emulsified polyvinyl acetate. This is the common glue use by carpenters. Thanks.

Have you tried acid hydrolisis? Heating your polymer with aqueous hydrochloric or sulphuric acid should do the trick. Acetic acid is a by product. Washing your material with water would be a way to purify it. The raction can be followed by infra-red to evaluate the degree of hydrolisis.

It's also possible to try treating polyacrylamide with bromine and sodium hydroxide, but the first one is safer.
