An increase of elongational viscosity during melt expansion is called strain hardening. It is the resistance of an elongated melt against high extension and is influenced by molecular weight distribution and long chain branching. High strain hardening is closely related to high melt strength. Strain hardening is usefull for melt spinning, blow molding, thermo forming and foaming. Some reading:
