Hand-like Robot

For designing hand or leg part of the robot,How you doing turning part of it?The only way is to use a DC Motor.Or is there any other way???

Ac or DC (or servo) Electric gear motors with quadrature decoder position sensors, and limit switch sensors. Stepper motors can be used as well with same sensors and stuff. Radio Control Model airplane servos, work good for smaller arms in this same respsect, usually a lot cheaper too. A number of people use pneumatics with air or hydraulics with fluids. Plus some use a combination of various things above.

thanks guys, but there is some problems.How can I give motion to the robot.I mean Do i have to connect the DC :motor and other part with a wire , string or something? Or directly I put it near wheel and DC Motor turns the wheel without any other stuff?
