40% off at Ben Franklin...

Just a little heads ... Ben Franklin has a 40% off coupon (which you can pick up in the store) for any one item over $9.99. They sell D (Estes) motors for that price which, with the coupon, brings it down to $6.00 + tax. Not a bad deal. The coupon is good for 2 weeks and you can use a coupon each day of the 2 weeks of the sale. I believe the sale runs until the 16th of Jan.

Yeah, the big hobby shop was Major Art & Hobby in downtown Davenport. Someone on rec.crafts.metalworking said it's still there. Hard to believe. I can remember a Saturn 5 model as tall as I (4'?). There was also a toy store in the little open air mall that sold Estes. Funny I can remember Team Electronics which was next door, but not the toy store name. Dad worked at Harvester in E Moline. I was just learning to drive when we moved so wasn't over the river very much.

I rode my bike to middle road park, which was only 2 streets away. There was never anyone on the ball diamonds so I could fly anytime I wanted. When I got the moped, I started launching further up from the Jewel (Osco, BenFranklin, and Coast to Coast). Couldn't tell you the street name, I'm sure it's all housing now. The roads were in and just piles of dirt everywhere. I rigged a launcher to run off my moped horn button.

They just closed one near my parents' house in Wyckoff, NJ.

The one on Cape Cod in Chatham is still open, never saw any MR kits though...

They come and go. The one in Daveport closed about a year ago. There is one in Iowa City, but they don't sell rocketry stuff.

I know North Carolina has at least one down at the southern edge of Nag's Head. It's mostly beach and tourist stuff. I doubt they'd have rockets.

There's one still in Chicago! Is this really the same Ben Franklin chain that used to be all over the country, along with Woolworth and Kresge.

Not sure if it's the "original" chain or not. Ours has been here a few years I guess. Woolworth's and Kresge were downtown when "mainstreet" had all the stores, before they went next to the highway. The latter two stores have been gone a looooong time now. Was a real treat to eat at the Woolworth's restaurant counter (with the old time fans above and the swivel stools) with my Grandmother way back when.

I looked around their web site. Corporate HQ is in Racine, right near NARCON-2004!

Excellent. I remember that also. I loved their grilled cheese. It's rarely tasted anywhere near as good since then. At our Woolworth's the grill was all the way across the store from the hobby section. Back in those days we had 5 and 10 stores all over the place. No one is a blood bank, one is a check cashing place, a third has been subdivided into smaller stores and the other is now an auto parts store. K-Mart pretty much sounded the death knell for all of them, and we know what is happening to K-Mart now.

We have a Michael's store in Minnesota that offers 40% off on a weekly basis. They have Estes Rockets from 13 mm mini up to the Big Daddy. Motors are up to a D12-5's and the flight packs. All these can be bought at 40% off with coupon. One per visit.

Several times a year they offer a 50% off coupon. That brings the Big daddy down to $12.50 and the flight pack to about $24.00.

Also , they are now offering a free rocket to Boy Scout troops for construction and a merit badge during the months of April and May.

If you have Michaels stores where you live and want Estes products at

40-50% off check it out.

ahh, now you guys are bringing be back to 1965 or thereabouts. I remember woolworths had the string across the top of the counter, with balloons on sticks hanging over it. You picked your balloon and inside was the price of your bananna split. I think I got one for five cents once!

I think woolworths grill was one of the earliest food service chains to had the early "commercial" microwave ovens. All stainless steel as I recall.

And it will likely happen to Wal-Mart in another 20-50 years...
