Dave "Ducky" Klouser

I don't know how many of you knew Dave Klouser. He was a longtime NAR competitor as well as one of the founders and past president of PARA, my NAR section.

Dave has suffered for many years from a degenerative form of dementia. I was recently contacted by his brother who informs me that his doctors give him about a month to live.

Ducky was amongst the first to reply when I started hanging out around here on RMR...

I translated one of his NARAM R&D reports into softcopy where he researched different long tools to retrieve rockets caught in the tall trees that must've been common in his area culminating with a contraption 43 foot long! While the topic was a bit dubious in the R&D sense, we felt it was a "Ducky" jewel worth keeping.

Duck was also a National Champion and a World Champion in FAI S4B (B boost glider).

A sad end for a powerful Jedi Master. . .

You know you are old when your "contemporaries" are dying left and right.

IIRC he used one of those long poles to get my NARAM-41 egglofter out of the top of the tree it landed in, right over the returns desk. Alas, in the process, the egg cracked and the model was damaged. So I had to go to my backup model. I think everyone who was there remembers that flight, seen by the timers for over 30 minutes, and IMHO is still up there.

The R&D report he prepared was for NARAM-41. That the pole took you out of egg lofting contention obviously meant some collusion was going on. Happen to recall who *did* win? There's a picture in it with somebody using that pole in a huge leafy tree. Luckily for us down here, tall leafy trees like the one in the picture would never survive the heat down here. ;-)

At a recent FAI, didn't he fly with the team and knowing he wasn't in good form, volunteeredto always go first using his models to help the rest of the team hunt thermals?

I recall as a kid, his articles were always both informative and entertaining.

Regards, Andy
