Air Travel Restictions - Guidance needed

I'm off to Europe for a month or two. I was until recently in the military, and my usual relaxation was to take a model or two, and a basic building set. Now, military transport is obviously different to civilian air.

Will I be allowed to have a tool box in hold baggage containing blades, paints, thinners etc? Any good links for guidance?

Cheers

Ian

You could contact each airport that you might be handled by.

Here's an example for Heathrow Airport as things sometimes change over time and there's not much worse than a mate who then says "well, I'm sure you could pack that!" after the situation has happened.

(scroll down to bottom);

You could always contact them directly ?

Hmmm......... no paints or thinners. I wonder if I'd get away with acrylics? Or I guess the other option is to prepare a parcel to myself, and get it posted out to me by my wife once I know what's happening!

Ian, Paints, Thinners and other flammable liquids have beeen dis-allowed since long before 9/11. There was a time you could mail order a kit and paints and get them second day air. Then they started cracking down on shipping flammables by air - now you order paints the stuff comes ground transport only.

Things change from time to time. So you may be able to get the blades etc on as checked baggage (Not sure what you ment by hold luggage - it goes in the baggage hold - checked baggage, or you hold on to it in the cabin - carry-on)- but again I'd check with the airline first. They tend to take a dim view of someone trying to get around the rules so I would recommend complying with the rules.

That's true! Missiles and other armaments come under farming machinery, BTW. :-)

Shouldn't have problems with hold lugguage but hand baggage is a different matter.

For hand baggage ....

Knifes and solvents have been prohibited for a long time

Additionally since August 2006 there have been restrictions on any liquids (which includes gels and paints). The restrictions are slowly being relaxed but are still in place.

I have just come back from a business trip (London Munich) and can confirm that the restrictions are in place at both ends. In summary the restrictions are ...

Liquids, gels and pastes can be taken if their containers are less than

100ml each and can all fit in a litre sized transparent and resealable bag which has to be presented separately. The litre sized bag is abaout 8inch by 8inch.

Obviously these are the rules for UK and Germany - the rules are applied at the departure airport with no checks at arrival so you will need to check for actual restrictions at the airports that you will fly from.

Cheers,

Nigel

Yep, hence why my first sentance was ....
