Ambulances

Jul 30, 2003 7 Replies

Hi,

I'm looking for kits of ambulances or firetrucks. The only ones I've been able to find are military vehicles. I would like civilian models.

If anyone can point me towards a good source, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,

AMT did several fire trucks (1/25), Johan did a Cadillac ambulance (1/25), Airfix (1/32) and Heller (1/24) did a few antique fire trucks and MPC did a large scale Christie Fire engine. There are also numerous one in HO (1/87) scale. Sam

Others have noted the Revell Monogram Mack fire apparatus, the Heller & Airfix rigs.

AMT/Ertl reissued, about a year ago, their 1:25 scale American LaFrance Series

1000 fire apparatus, the pumper, Aero Chief and Ladder Chief. These were pricey, but they are magificent when built.

Only one civilian US ambulance kit that I am aware of, the JoHan 1966 Cadillac/Superior ambulance. This was done first in 1966, then reissued in the early 1980's, remaining pretty much generally available until the demise of the original JoHan company in about 1990. They are out there, probably eBay items now.

However, all is not lost! Polar Lights makes an excellent kit of the Ghostbusters Ecto-1, which in real life began as a 1959 Cadillac/Miller-Meteor ambulance, and with a bit of work undoing all the Hollywood stuff, can be made into a very credible Miller-Meteor ambulance.

I haven't seen any model kits of the more modern Box-Body ambulances, and doubt seriously we will ever see one.

there's the Polar Lights Ecto 1 from Ghostbusters, but that could be a hearse....

Revell Germany did a wide range of euro fire appliances in 1/22 scale, most based on the Unimog chassis but there were others also. AMT did a range of America La France trucks also, I remember building their pumper and a ladder truck some years ago. Quite nice kits. you might find one on Ebay. I think Jo-Han also released a couple of ambulances and a hearse some years ago

There's also the Dodge van issued as an ambulance by AMT. Jose.

Is this the same one issued in their "Rescue 911" line of kits? Rob Gronovius Visit my motor pool in the
