Kitech = Italeri?

I picked up an "F/A-18A Hornet" by Kitech (08M-M347) from Kay-Bee Toys. Later, I got an "F-18 Hornet" by Testors/Italeri (681) -- both 1/72. Although arranged differently on the sprue trees, the parts are seemingly identical. Are these the same kit by any chance? And are other Kitech kits also copies of other manufacturers? Just wondering...

(By the way, the fit of the Kitech kit is terrible!)

I got an "F-18

the sprue trees,

are other Kitech kits

Kitech is Zhengdefu. I have the USS Constellation carrier kit that I'll eventually build, but I'm not looking forward to it. The main reason I bought it is it's the same scale as the old Monogram USS KittyHawk, mine of which has broken pieces I'll loot from the Con'.

Kitech is one of the names used by Zhengdefu, a Chinese model manufacturer who likes to take other manufactures, namely Italeri and Hasegawa, and copy ther mouldings to form their own kits. As you have correctly sumised the F/A-18 is the Italeri kit, whilst their F-16 offerings are from the Hasegawa moulds. You have probably already discovered that the clear sections and the decals are no use at all and best replaced with items from your spares box or moulded and created by you. You may also have noticed the nasty textured finish to the plastic which resembles a teenager with a seriuous case of acne, which any amount of sanding will not smooth off, so don't try you'll end up sanding through the plastic before removing all the bumps!! After building a couple of these kits I decided that the finished quality is not really good enough so I tend to use them for trying out new building and painitng techniques as I have no problem wasting a =A32.50 kit as apposed to a =A312.50 kit, if you know what I mean. I must admit I quite enjoy making them simply because despite a few fit problems they are not that hard to rectify and at the end of the day if it all goes badly wrong, who cares. Just enjoy making them, but don't take them seriously, and just learn as many building and painting tecniques as you can as you go along, it can only help make you a better modeller. Happy modelling.

I am buying the REvelle kits at Walmart.. airplanes. As I am a tank guy, airplanes are best purchased cheap, as I generally screw them up pretty good. So, I buy these kits, which are are marginal and use them to become a better airplane modeler. In the meantime, they are not horrible and provide several hours of plactic enjoyment per kit. I put the Spitfire and P-40B Tiger together last night...

Price was the reason I got the kits, as well. Kay-Bee Toys had "Buy 3, Get 1 Free," and at $5 a kit list price, how could I resist? Plus, I'm getting back into serious modelling after a 30-year hiatus (by "serious" I mean having a dedicated table to work on, investing in paints, breaking out the airbrush after so many years, etc.), so these would be ideal to practice on before tackling quality kits.

Thanks for the responses!

For the record, the Kitech 1/48 F-111s are not so great copies of Academy's kits.
