OT: Questions on the Sept. Sunsetting Clinton Crime Bill

Assuming the bill sunsets in Sept. of this year, when and what exactly will become legal to buy and own? Specifically, Will all Hi-caps be legal? All folding stocks? Will under

16" barrels be legal? etc. And when will I be able to legally own? Sept. 1st at midnight? Sept. 30th?

I would think it would really depend more on local laws than on the sunsetting. I know CA passed a bunch of junk in anticipation of such - I'd expect the answer to vary from state to state, and possibly from county to county.

He should be posting this on the NRA questions website, not here.

I put an OT in front to let everyone know it was off topic. I posted here because a lot of us in here are gun owners and this is the only NG I get straight answers from, whatever the subject.

Only the things that the law banned will be affected. I can not by any means give you a complete list but I'm sure google can help you out. Off the top of my head the bill banned hi capacity magazines (>10 rounds) and any combination of two or more of the following on a rifle with a detachable magazine: flash suppressors, folding stocks, bayonet mounts, grenade launcher (meaning rifle grenades), and pistol grips. The law also banned pistols with a detachable magazine and any two of the following: a magazine that attaches outside of the pistol grip, threaded barrel for silencers etc., a shroud on the barrel, or an empty weight of 50 ounces or more. The law also banned some guns by name. Some that pop into my head are AK-47's, Uzi's, Mac-10/11, FN/FAL, and Tec-9.

I think the biggest effect that the law going away will have is that hi-capacity (normal) mags will be available again. I know I will go out and buy a few for my H&K USP. I bought the gun just before the ban went into effect and by the time the stupid waiting period was over (like I didn't already have a gun at home) the law had been enacted and I got the two 15's that came with the gun but the dealer was out of additional ones. I went back a couple of months later and bought a ten. I tried to buy another couple of 15's at a gun show but the guy wanted $150 a piece for them and I didn't want them that bad.

I suspect that it will take at least a month for anything that was banned to become available if the law sunsets. Keep in mind that the law bans the sale, importation, and manufacture of these items (except for law enforcement) so they will esentially have to be made after the law goes away. Please note that it has always been legal to own anything the law bans provided that it was manufactured before the law was enacted.
