i found a book labeled uss mdway cv-40 1981-1982 and it looks like a college or high school yearbook. is this a normal event? is it like a cruise log? are they common?

Yep, it's called a "cruisebook". Pictures of permanent and airwing personnel, events, etc, etc during any given cruise. Everything you'd find in a school yearbook, just Navy related Mine were unfortunately lost.

It's a primary historical source, for any historian whose studies might touch on those people, that ship, that airwing, or the history in which they were involved. Consider the significance of a cruisebook that might include George H.W. Bush's tour of duty in WWII, as an example. It could give leads to people who dealt directly with him during that period. As such it could be invaluable in preparing a biography.
