MOLD CORE AND CAVITY

Has anyone tried the new mold design tools? I have tried them and they work well on simple parts but did not work on a more complicated part that i had just finished manually. Thanks Bill

The "Shut Off Surfaces" is the weakness. It only creates simple surfaces. If we could select surfaces that were already created previously in the model would be better.

Here's the way to do it.

Go thru the Mold Tools as normal until you get to the Shut Off surfaces tool. When you use this tool and it finds all the open loops, change the Callout Tags in the Graphics area by clicking them to "NO FILL". This will make the shutoffs without patching the holes.

Now, make your shutoff surfaces any way you want.

Once complete, you will need to select each Custom shutoff surface and make a Surface Offset from it a distance of '0', which will do a surface copy.

In the Surface bodies folder in the feature manager, move all the manually created surfaces to "Cavity Bodies" subfolder, and all the offset (copied) surfaces to the "Core Bodies" subfolder.

Then, just go ahead and make your parting surface and tooling splits.

It does work very well when you know how to change the loop callouts on screen and manually fill surfaces to your own specs.

On a side note, it automatically tries to choose the 'split loops'. If you want it to shut off at a different spot, you can use split lines to split the faces where you desire. Then when you use the Shut Off Surfaces tool, you can deselect the loops it finds automatically and reselect the loops you created.

This will make the Core and Cavity split surfaces match eachother at the edges you want, not the ones SolidWorks finds on it's own.

I hope this helps!!

Thanks,

Darin
