If I had just a simple circle extruded to some length, i.e. a round bar is the final part. Is there a way to suppress the end face of the bar?

Sort of. What is it you are trying to do? If you just want a tube, you could use a thin extrude. If you want a tube with one end, you can do a "normal" extrude and a shell, picking the end you don't want. If you just want the surfaces, without one end, you can do an extrude and then delete one end face.
