IHC Hobby

Hi all, new member of this group and was wondering if anyone had experience with IHC Hobby. I see that they are offering a 4-6-4 Hudson with a free 0-8-0 switcher in the april MR. Magazine for $149.98 and was wondering if it is worth the price. Thanks. Howard

Hi Howard,

I have found the IHC locos to be quite wonderful. And it sounds like your magazine "deal" is a good value.

I have just gotten back into the hobby after many years. And the cool thing is how the IHC locos run smooth and silent. Unlike the noisy and not well done "toy grade" locos I was familiar with from the 70's and

80's. (But I still love them).

IHC steamers are very nicely detailed and look great. I have seven of them. The cool thing is that when they are pulling a train, then you can hear the "clickety clack" of the car wheels when the pass over track joints. Just like the real thing.

And in this new hobby world of "premium" trains, the IHC models cost far less than the other offerings. They are first class. You can get several of them for the price of an Athearn "Genesis" loco.

IHC has been a quality company for a long time.

Disclaimer: I do not work for nor have any financial interest in IHC, or any other model railroad company. I am just an old time, long time model railroader.

Cheers,

Robert

I purchased a pair of 2-8-0s about 2 years ago. They have been run almost daily, are quiet and have pulled a consist of up to 12 cars over grades of

3% without any problems. A good buy if your not fussy about the lack of extreme detailing available on much more expensive models, John

Thanks for the info. I think there's a pair of Hudsons in my future!

I have a pair of IHC 2-6-0 Moguls. Excellent runners, quiet, good slow speed operation. Good looking, reasonble amount of detail. Each one cost me in the neighborhood of $70 a few years ago, so a pair of decent locomotives (Hudson & switcher) for $150 is reasonable. I haven't personally seen the Hudson or the switcher, but I would expect them to be as good as the Moguls I do have. If you like the locomotives, you will be pleased with the performance. On the Moguls I was able to install a working front coupler with a modest amount of Dremel work on the pilot. Painting the bright nickel plated tender wheels helps the looks. Some weathering would do good things for them. Just a dusting of DullCote will kill the plastic gloss.
