Sounds like you have some aftermarket couplers on the cars. The vestibules shouldn't be touching at any point while the car pair is going around the curves and if they are, you need to use the longer coupler that fits the coupler box. In addition, truck mounted couplers should allow a much closer fit than the body mounted ones so you have a mismatch between the car and the coupler.
