You would have to consult the decoder documentation to see if that functionality is built in. Most likely not.

If not you could experiment with different resistors to reduce the current to an acceptable level of smoke an longevity. Measure what power is there, see what the manufacturer recommends and compute the required resistance. I think this is the formula?

(F1 volts - Smoke volts)/Smoke Amps = resistor ohms

The unit is likely getting about 14.5 volts of power. More than it got as a DC unit.
