We must place blame where it is due. The political messages are all offtopic and should not be here in the first place. Remember, Web TV does not require a computer.

Regarding the recent "political" postings, over the past seventy years, I've found that people who refer to others as "stupid" are often not very bright themselves and anything they say or write is usually not worth anyone's time to listen to or read.

As for WebTV, we find it more relaxing to sit in a recliner to browse the 'net and get away from the computer once in a while. It's easier on our old bodies, too.

You can also use a "video out" card (most modern video cards have the "S" output for TV on them) with a real computer and have all the ease of WebTV with all the functionality of a computer.

Yup, on Usenet, your kill file can be your best friend.

'musta been a lot of junk on here lately- when I first started my news reader this morning, it was indicating that there were 110 unread posts in r.m.r. When it applied my filtering rules to drop the junk threads and the idiots, it was down to 65 unread posts. That's just based on posters and subject line keywords I have kill-filed, as well as a few specific threads that required manual kill-filing.

The only thing standing between me and complete Usenet experience happiness is that I still need to switch to a news reader that will support a rule for kill-filing based on the number of crossposted groups- my general rule of thumb is that if a post is cross-posted to more than two newsgroups, it's unlikely to be sufficiently on-topic to be worth reading.

I do that with my laptop and wireless home network - browse the net wherever I want to, and much faster and at much higher resolution than WebTV (I evaluated one years ago).

That's my experience also. About half the messages are purged by my killfile and other filters before I ever see them. The trolls, spammers, and OT posters tend to be the most prolific.

I use MS Outlook Express which allows you to filter out messages cross-posted to specific NGs, but not to a given number of NGs.

I use Thunderbird, which allows building filters for all NGs from a given new server, or one NG at a time, whichever you want. You have to select and enter the filter data, though - it doesn't (yet) have the capability of clicking on a junkor spam file and building a filter to suit. (It does do that for e-mail, though.)

Thunderbird is the e-mail/new group client in Mozilla, and can be downloaded and used separately. Go to mozilla.org for information. It's all free, too.

I'm familiar with the term "killfile," but I'm not sure how to consign an undesirable poster there in my version of OE for Mac, version 5.02.

First, ditch OE. There's SO much better stuff out there for Mac - why cripple your computer by using M$ software?

Try a google search for "newsreader Macintosh" - there are a lot of options, freeware, shareware, and commercial.

With most of them, you can kill specific posters, or crossposted items according to how many groups they're spread over.

I made a rule to delete any message with stupid in the header. It tossed out the whole bunch without eliminating those messages on topic from people who answer back to these flamers.

If the MAC version works the same as the one for Windows:

- highlight (but don't open) a message from the sender you want to kill-file

- drop down the "Messages" menu

- click on "Block Sender" All future messages from that sender will be blocked and you have the option of removing the ones already posted.
