Souping up a Bachmann Trackster?

Has anyone been able to get better performance out of those models? Perhaps by adding weight or upgrading to a modern motor?

I just received a brand new one, and it runs only when it is held down to the track. (And seems to run well in that case.) It is the Step Van, so there should be room to add some extra weight...

Things like that need to have some weight on them. Check for wipers on the wheels and if there aren't any, put some spring wire on them and that will cure much of the contact problems. Often the problems are that there are only 2 wheels actually making the electrical connection and that is a sure problem source as one of those wheels will probably be in the air - Murphy's Laws are at work here! In addition, the adding of Cerrobend or lead to any space inside will help in contacting the track.
