OT- a mamod

We've got a Mamod Steam Roller, similar to your Mamod Stationary Steam Engine,they were sold in the '50s and '60s in upper end Canadian department stores toy sections for @ $120.00cdn., made in Great Britain. I don't know of any kids that had them and were allowed to use them without an adult supervisor after the first scalding or burn on careless hands. Spud

I've still got loads - great fun!!! My first one was bought for me for my 13th birthday (the kit traction engine and log trailer in black and yellow) - and unlike others my parents stayed well out of the way letting me burn my self, but also giving me the freedom to move on to bigger and better things.

Hope this helps and have fun running it - when I was a kid I used to "rally" my mamods at Barlylands Steam rally in essex. My friend Dave had a wolsely WD2 which we hooked up to an air compressor and then we had one mamod in steam the rest running on air, in rotation - happy days !

For my 18th I saved up cash and was given some monay I a bought a wilesco tractio engine. Similar, but more advanced with slip eccentric piston valves and gears rather than oscillating cylinders and wire bands.

Many different types of Mamods stationary steamers

-- singles, twins, with & without a whole range of accessories. Been around for a long time. Over last 20 years they have gome in for a fair number of quite large steam cars etc to complement the familiar traction engines & rollers. Nice lumber wagons etc also available.

Hit eBay search with Mamod, & you'll see a whole stack any day. Lot of collectors.

I bought a Mamod stationary steam engine about 20 years ago, this had a red base with holes to suit Meccano. It was an SE2a with one piston. Had I the money, it would have been a SE3a with two pistons!

IIRC the box stated that Mamod was made by Malins Engineers although their web site does not mention this now.

I may still have the catalogue which shows the model range from that time. If the piston is mounted on the bolier them it is one of the Minor models, if the piston is mounted on the base then it is possibly a SE2, 2a, 3.
